1989 yılında Alman Steinberg firması tarafından yazılmış ve müzik kayıt dünyasında standart olmuş bir DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) yazılımıdır.
Cubase 1989 yılında Atari ST serisi kişisel bilgisayarlarla hayatına başladı. O tarihlerde yaygın olan Professional 24 isimli yazılıma karşın daha kullanışlı olmasıyla kısa zamanda geniş çevrelerde yankı uyandırdı.

Gelişen teknoloji Atari pazarını azalttığında Apple ve Microsoft firmalarını yazılımları boy göstermeye başlamıştı. 1992 yılında Cubase Pc versiyonu çıktı. Rakip yazılımlara karşı sürekli güncellenen cubase version 3.0 da bir takım hatalar ve MROS kullanımından dolayı sekteye uğrasada VST (Virtual Studio Technology) olarak yenilenen motoruyla kısa zamanda toparlandı.

İlk önceleri sadece midi sequenceri olarak çalışan Cubase v.3.0 ve sonrasında ses işleme özellikleriyle daha da gelişti.
1999 yılında VSTi teknolojisiyle sanal enstrümanlar kullanımını başlattı. Halen piyasada benzer yazılımlar ile boy ölçüşmektedir. En son versiyonu yakın zaman önce sürülen Cubase SX4 tür.
